How to Choose the Right Button Size for Shirts and Coats

Choosing the correct button size is essential for both functionality and appearance.

If you have your original buttons, you can measure them first to find the right size.
If you don’t have the original buttons or are unsure, you can refer to the size chart below.

Common Shirt Button Sizes:
- 11.5 mm (15/32") ≈ 0.45" | 18L — Shirt collars and sleeve cuffs
- 12.5 mm (1/2") ≈ 0.49" | 20L — Shirt fronts
- 15 mm (19/32") ≈ 0.59" | 24L — Heavier shirts or overshirts

Common Jacket & Coat Button Sizes:
- 18 mm (11/16") ≈ 0.71" | 28L — Light jackets, cardigans
- 20 mm (25/32") ≈ 0.79" | 32L — Jackets, knitwear
- 23–25 mm (7/8"–1") ≈ 0.91"–0.98" | 36L–40L — Coats, outerwear

Tips:
- Larger buttons provide better balance and visual proportion for thicker fabrics.
- For heavy winter coats, larger buttons are essential.
- Buttons that are too small may not withstand the tension of thick fabrics and can become damaged or break.
- Measure the existing button across the widest point (diameter) for accuracy.

Still uncertain? You can ask a professional at a dry cleaner or a tailor to help you measure your garment and recommend the correct button size.
