Shank Buttons – How to Choose and Use Them

Shank buttons differ from standard sew-through buttons because the attachment point is located on the back of the button rather than through holes on the face.

This creates a small gap between the button and the fabric when attached.

Why Use Shank Buttons?

Because the button sits slightly above the fabric, there is more space for thicker materials to pass through when fastening.

This can reduce stress around the buttonhole and make fastening easier on garments made from heavier fabrics.

Common Types

Metal Shank Buttons

Often used where additional strength and durability are required.

Natural Material Shank Buttons

Horn, corozo, shell, and other natural materials can also be manufactured with shanks.

Measuring Shank Buttons

Shank buttons are measured across the widest point of the button face.

For most applications, measuring the visible face diameter provides a suitable size reference.

Construction Characteristics

Unlike sew-through buttons, shank buttons create additional space between the button and the fabric.

This construction can be useful on garments with thicker front panels or layered construction.
